£10500 is that too much for happiness?

Click on the picture to go to the eBay advert.

I saw this van or one very much like it at Glastonbury last year. It was for sale at the same price as this one. I have had a nagging regret ever since I saw it last summer. That is why didn't I just buy it while I had the chance (only ten were made for the right hand drive UK market). The one obvious answer to that question is I don't have ten and a half grand, but since I saw her again I just cant help myself from wondering - what if I just borrowed the money.

It's a classic in waiting, and comfy.

So friends help me. Should I make my life significantly more uncomfortable both financially and personally just to be VW happy or should I just let it lie?

Well....

1. Are you going to sell the current camper van? What will you get for it? Let's say 3k pounds.

2. That leaves 7500 pounds.

3. In order to save 7500 you'll need to *not spend* 20 quid a day. Or not make certain large purchases.

4. So let's say you don't buy beer for the next year. If that's 50 a week, that takes off 2600, leaving 4900.

5. Ok, what if you *don't* take one large trip next year? Not Glastonbury, obvy, since that's the whole point. But something else. Say that saves 500.

6. Now you're working on 4400.

7. Ok, I'm out of ideas. Giving up beer seemed really radical.

Anyway, I suspect that you could bring down the cost substantially by taking some steps to cut back and by selling the current camper. And you've wanted a VW for as long as I've known you.

So perhaps this is the time.

Thank you wise one.

A part time job seems to be the best solution at the moment. I'm not sure how easy that will be to achieve. This along with some cutting down on the beer and other treats may help. You know if I spent 50 quid a week on beer I think I would be dead but I get where you are coming from.

Our caravan only cost us 1k and is only wort a couple of hundred quid, but every little helps.

I think I will spend the morning taking your train of thought to its conclusion. I will let you know when I have figured it out.

Thanks for the advice. Lets go camping!

OK, so let's say you get a part-time job at it pays 5 pounds an hour. If you worked 10 hours a week that would make you about 200 pounds a month (I'm assuming 5 after taxes, maybe that's crazy).

At that rate, it would take a while to pay off that puppy. So I think you'd have to combine the job with cutting back on beer (let's say 10 a week for another 40 a month). If you had any down payment...you could pay it off in a few years. And it'll last forever, right?

BUT - where would you park it? And, how long do you want to work that extra job? And, is it possible there to get a home-equity loan and thus fold a small loan into your mortgage? Bad idea?

You could rent it out to friends for weekends, for like 50 a pop. Cheaper than renting one, and if you trusted them...it'd be like a vacation house that pays for itself.

Obviously, I am the money-spending devil.

Normally Mrs. F is all "don't spend money! you need to save" so I am pleased to see her say go and buy it and drive around England caravaning a la Top Gear... BTW: congrats on your nuptials! Will and I are doing that in June, as you may know. And where can I get me a white German Shepard?
