Blast from the past.

This is one of those songs that helped form the person before you. I had this on 7" and must have almost worn it through. I loved it. I think my brother Mick still has it - he inherited my 7" collection while I was living in the USA.

I hung around with a diverse crowd, some were safe and trustworthy and others were the exact opposite of that. This reminds me more of the bad crowd (not bad people when you are their friend).

It brings back a strong memory of me driving (passenger) to South End in a car thats ownership was dubious. With this tune playing on the ancient tape player and all of us singing back in bellowing unison. Drinking that night in a rough pub in Basildon, I was just a fresh faced 15 year old. Escaping the popo, after being stopped. Having to blag my way home through the home counties with no money and my mum and dad thinking I was on a camping trip. So I couldn't call for help. I had to learn how to cope under pressure, when I decided that it was just getting a little too real and bailed.

This is why I love music so much. What else can spark your brain into a whirlwind of recollection and reminiscence?

I had a look for this when I first started this blog but couldn't find it at the time. Thank you YouTube. I have added the Cockney translation for good measure, correct at the time of printing 1985. I am that old.

Truly this must qualify as a work of art.

I will let this ad from theSamba.com talk for itself. Now how do I get my hands on 100k in a hurry?

God is in the detail.

1954 Barndoor 23 Window Deluxe Sunroof!! Price: Ask!
1954 Barndoor 23 Window Deluxe Sunroof, Beautifully Restored! Dont pass up viewing the 180 pictures at the website www.colomemotors.com the 18 do not give the bus justice!

Here it is, the mythical fantasy Bus that sits atop the "Maybe One Day" wish lists of Bus lovers around the World. Approximately 100 Barndoor Deluxes are known to exist today and this one is certainly in the top handful of those remaining examples. Early, rare, the top of the line, correct, and absolutely beautiful throughout!

This Bus started out as an amazing survivor, extremely dry, straight, correct, and complete before it was lovingly restored by a top level enthusiast who has a reputation for perfectionism and incredibly exotic Vintage Volkswagens. His approach was that if he already had a nice original part and had a chance to upgrade it to a mint NOS part, he did. This Bus required no welding during its restoration! Starting with the best possible candidate has translated to the best possible finished product, and it shows throughout.

The list of cool features on this Bus would read like a telephone book so I'll just highlight a fraction of them... spectacular Sealing Wax Red and Chestnut Brown paint, pressed bumpers with Deluxe trim, NOS Barndoor Bubble Taillights, correct glass reflectors, NOS symmetrically fluted European Bus Headlights, perfect semaphores, all the correct seats including the Barndoor 6 leg middle seat and the Barndoor rear seat, perfect snowflake kick panels, correct 16" Bus wheels with new AVON bias ply black walls, mohair headliner, 36hp engine (We have sourced a correct '54/'55 fuel pump which is being rebuilt for it now. We are also trying to dig up a correct Bosch centrifugal advance distributor for it as well), Barndoor split case transaxle, NOS brakelight assembly, very rare NOS Barndoor Dehne Fuel Gauge, restored Telefunken Lightning Bolt Radio, very rare Rosenthal accessory Ashtrays, and so much more.

The mirror-like Sealing Wax Red and Chestnut Brown body is thoroughly correct, correct Barndoor cab doors with the super shallow handle recesses, cargo doors, apron, decklid, both bumpers including the Barndoor long-ribbed front, absolutely beautiful original seamed doglegs, etc. Again, the best possible starting place for this restoration shows itself everywhere you look. Just take a look at the rocker, belly pan, and floor pics, absolutely jawdropping.

Moving to the interior the Bus is equally as remarkable. The correct seats have been expertly recovered in the correct black leatherette with red piping, correct mohair headliner, beautiful interior paneling, gleaming painted dash, floors, etc. All of the aluminum trim parts including the jailbars and correct Barndoor coat hooks have been polished to a high luster. The interior has been tastefully accessorized with extremely unique, desirable, and valuable items including the NOS Barndoor Dehne Fuel Gauge, beautifully restored Telefunken Lightning Bolt Radio, ornate Rosenthal Ashtrays, and German Bud Vases. The interior is as nice as when it left the Wolfsburg factory 54 years ago and is decked out with vintage accessories that could have been ordered at the dealership over half a century ago.

Mechanically the Bus is bone stock original with a beautifully rebuilt 1192cc 36hp engine with all the correct parts other than the previously mentioned fuel pump and distributor, correct Bosch round regulator, thin slot generator, thin lipped top pulley, thick nut, Solex 28 PCI Carb topped with a correct strap top aircleaner, complete crankstart system, single tip Bus muffler with the correct short tip, etc. The transaxle is the original Barndoor split case reduction box unit that has been completely rebuilt and detailed as well. The brakes have been completely restored and everything down to the original style 16 inch bias ply AVON black wall tires is as it would have been back in 1954. The electrical system is of course still 6 volt as well. Authentic and original was the goal mechanically and authentic and original is the result.

Barndoor Deluxes are at the top of the food chain in collectible VWs and examples of this level can be counted on two hands. This can truly be viewed as an opportunity to attain your fantasy Bus and fulfill what is usually nothing more than a wild fantasy for most Bus lovers.

This Bus was once part of the famous Richard Hart Barndoor collection back in the 1980's.
